About this coloring page

Jesus sits alone among rocks and sparse vegetation in a desert landscape. The sun is low in the sky, casting long shadows. A few wild animals are visible in the distance — a fox, a bird — but they keep their distance. Jesus' posture is one of prayer and fasting, not suffering. This page captures the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness being tempted by the devil. The rocky textures, the sparse plants, and the layered sky give kids steady, grounding work while Jesus stays small but central in the vast landscape.

Suggested Scripture: Matthew 4:1 (NIV) — Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

The page is designed as a printable Christian coloring activity that can support a short Bible conversation, a family devotional moment, or a calm classroom activity.

Teaching ideas for parents and teachers

  • Before coloring, ask kids what they think forty days in the wilderness would feel like. Most will say "lonely" or "hard." Then ask why Jesus went there.
  • For ages 5–7: keep it simple. Jesus went to a quiet, hard place to pray and be close to God. Sometimes we need quiet places too.
  • For Sunday school: focus on the three temptations. Ask, "Why do you think the devil picked those three things? And why did Jesus answer with Scripture each time?"
  • For family devotion: read Matthew 4:1–11. Ask, "What's one 'wilderness' place our family has been to — not literally, but spiritually?"

Print and activity tips

  • Color the rocks in warm browns and grays; layer the tones to suggest roughness.
  • Use pale yellows and oranges for the sky to suggest the heat of the desert.
  • Keep Jesus' robe in simple, muted tones; He should feel like part of the landscape, not separate from it.

Discussion questions

  • Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Have you ever felt like God led you into a hard place? What happened?
  • The devil tempted Jesus with food, power, and safety. Which of those tempts you the most?
  • Jesus answered each temptation with Scripture. What's one Bible verse you could use when you're tempted?
  • Forty days is a long time. What's one thing you've done for a long time that required patience?
  • The wild animals were there but didn't hurt Jesus. What does that tell you about peace?
